Grab a pencil (or pen), a piece of paper, and your imagination. You got yourself some quality father/son time coming.

I call the game Pencil Wars though I'm sure the Internets will tell me other names.

The Object is to destroy the enemy's camp.

Set up the board by drawing a line representing the shore that separates your land from the water, across from which your opponent is doing the same.

Next, draw five bases (circles with X's inside).

To play, set the point of your pen in the crosshairs of one of your bases, and, holding the pen down against the paper, tilt it slightly and exert pressure until it skips from under that pressure to create a sporadic line.

Image

Lay a ruler along the line just created, carrying it on toward your opponent's bases. If the line hits a base, destroy it with a mighty flourish of the pen. If not, pretend the shot lands in the dirt, the water, or strikes a pigeon in mid-air.

Take turns firing until either yours or your opponent's bases are destroyed. If you have a boy, at some point your paper should look like this:

Close up of the carnage:

Extra goodies:
- Add things like force fields that must be struck several times to destroy, islands, and boats that can fire torpedoes.
- If you're short on time, go into blitz mode with both players using two pencils and firing simultaneously.
- My son also wants you to know the secret password: 846124/5$.
- Other stuff you can make up on the spot.

I love this site. It was just born but I'm finding it expands my thinking first by the way in which my brain takes in the artist's/thinker's visualization of thoughts, and second by the thoughts themselves.

I love the name of the site. Had never heard about vibriofischeri, but now that I know its connection to bioluminescence, it's a beautiful metaphor for the dissemination/multiplication of ideas. Vibriofischeri = Infographical ideation. Also like "Energyvortext."

Thu, 17 Nov 2011 19:20:00 -0800 Android - Introducing Ice Cream Sandwich http://mrcook.org/android-introducing-ice-cream-sandwich http://mrcook.org/android-introducing-ice-cream-sandwich
When an incoming call arrives, you can now quickly respond by text message, without needing to pick up the call or unlock the device. On the incoming call screen, you simply slide a control to see a list of text responses and then tap to send and end the call. You can add your own responses and manage the list from the Settings app.

Ice Cream Sandwich is an impressive update. Improved shutter speed and multi-snaps in the camera. Killer live-transcription. Simplified core apps. Even screenshots.

Unfortunately, it's not the iOS experience yet. Android dug itself into a big usability hole by making decisions like having four hardware buttons and leaving it unclear the context in which to use them. Ice Cream Sandwich is getting Android out of the hole (now only two hardware buttons + home button), but it'll take yet another version (or more) to achieve true simplicity.

Image

When it comes to driving in the city, some folks think about how to get past the cars next to them, revving engines just to screech to a halt at the stop light they didn't notice. The game is about weaving in the moment. Others look ahead and consider ways to make their drives peaceful and their vehicles well maintained, coasting to the next stop light to conserve gas and brakes. It's about getting to a destination successfully and with class.

When it comes to software development, it is important to be the latter driver--in a car with a powerful engine, looking ahead instead left or right, and ready to make the right moves according to the destination. Too many organizations are the former driver, though. They see a trend to jump on or a competitor to beat, so they rev up only to find themselves stalled at the next light and wasting fuel. The constant weaving takes its toll on nerves and morale. Let's not race to the next red light; let's get somewhere--with class.

Tue, 01 Nov 2011 09:44:00 -0700 The inside story of how Microsoft killed its Courier tablet http://mrcook.org/the-inside-story-of-how-microsoft-killed-its http://mrcook.org/the-inside-story-of-how-microsoft-killed-its
Early on, the group opted to use Windows for Courier's operating system. But it wasn't a version of Windows that any consumer would recognize. The Courier team tweaked the operating system to make sure it could perform at high levels with touch- and pen-based computing. What's more, the graphical shell of Windows--the interface that computer users associate with the operating system--was entirely removed. So while it was Windows under the hood, the home screens bore zero resemblance to the familiar PC desktop.

Sounds like Microsoft was too afraid to do what Apple did 4 years ago: Reimagine their operating system, keeping the success of the core intact but leaving all else to the wind.

Don't hold on to sacred cows, especially cows the size of Windows.

This article is a great study in the ever-present politics at companies.

Peace and Dignity Journeys runners start simultaneously from both ends of the continent in Chickaloon, Alaska and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina traversing the entire continent by foot from community to community and joining together for a final gathering in Central America, Panama. The 2012 run is dedicated to Water, reminding all who have forgotten that Water is an important resource and a shared resource for all.

THIS is a run I can participate in. I met the organizer of this event at Opportunity Collaboration this year. Amazing guy. The idea of ceremonial running is so intriguing as well. Great connection.

Everything I need to know about entrepreneurship I learned in soccer.

Midfielders have to see what's behind and what's ahead; have to know when and how to motivate their players with a voice of confidence; have to read the opposing team's strength on offense and weakness on defense.

In a sense midfielders are the on-field entrepreneurs of a soccer game, and I got to play the post time and again during my four years in high school (now I coach six year olds).

Fri, 21 Oct 2011 22:22:24 -0700 Opportunity Collaboration 2011 - Five Connections, Five Questions, and Five Moments http://mrcook.org/opportunity-collaboration-2011-five-connectio http://mrcook.org/opportunity-collaboration-2011-five-connectio
"Convene. Connect. Create." it's the motto of the movement. I can say that in a rich way each of these C's took place at OppColl this year. The big question, of course, is whether OppColl as a happening has spurred us toward greater efficiency, quality, and tenacity in alleviating poverty in this world.

I can only speak for myself: Yes. I hope these lists shed a little light on why.

Five Awesome Connections

1. Hugo Araujo
Having introduced me to a topic--biomimicry--whose research and application will no doubt consume many an hour, Hugo provided ecosystem-level perspective on models of social entrepreneurship for true sustainability. He kinda blew my mind wide open in a good way. And he's got an excellent idea for ecosystem impact measurement of businesses that I think is killer. And I love his accent.

2. Ashok Regmi
I now have an indelible memory in the way I got to know Ashok. I had jut "pitched an idea for a technology platform for youth social entrepreneurs, and the first things he did was share failures and successes of technology in a spirit of humility. When everyone else pointed out what was wrong with the concept, he led by doing the opposite. Don't get me wrong; he was certainly poking holes in the pitch. But he's earned my trust, respect, and friendship through radical transparency, not to mention a great sense of "humorility."

3. Andre Albuquerque
Andre's work to transform slums into regularized cities is nothing short of breathtaking. The effort takes a collaboration between local municipality, private sector, and slum community that conjures images of what it must have been like to see the Titanic disembark for the first time--years of effort. Unlike the Titanic, however, Terra Nova's model will never sink the community it carries forward, but instead galvanize it as it continues to grow toward a prosperous future.

4. Wiclif Otieno
Wiclif received one of two of our HiDef Innovation Fellowships given for this year's convening. We had a chance to sit down and I was reaffirmed in my belief that he represents everything the social enterprise movement was created for. Youth with a will, a dream, and a jump start can change their communities--and the world.

5. Martín Burt
Indefatigably empowering, I learned of the work Martín has been doing with low-cost private schools working with a microfinance model. Thanks to his proven successes I've left with new vision for the application of social enterprise models in the U.S. harnessing the full power of technology and community.

Here are a few more folks I am privileged to have got to know deeper beyond the profile:
* Lori Bonn
* Imari Jeffries
* Scott Fifer
* Kumari
* Chantal Sheehan
* Tambe Harry Agbor
* Jay Crosby
* Adam Hevenor
* Susanna Vila
* Leonard Chumo Falex
* Sonali Mehta

Five Important Questions
When you attend a conference you often find that there are topics that drift from conversation to conversation and grow stronger as the days progress. Here are a few that I found led to good conversation and humility of thought for myself.

1. What is poverty?
My continued revelation around the discussion of poverty is this: Only part of the answer centers around economics. The other part centers around community. To define poverty without qualifying both parts will lead to unsustainable--even shameful--models to alleviate it.

Here's a definition I scribbled in a notebook through a societal lens: Poverty is lack basic necessities and/or rich community. In the definition we must account for both, because only then will we see--and solve--the problem in a sustainable way.

2. Does charity enable poverty?
If we define charity as the a la carte action of handing out a resource to people who lack that resource and depend on said handout to get it, then yes, charities reinforce the cycles. They do not solve root problems but only treat surface symptoms. Sounds like bad medicine. (Please argue with me on this one!)

I've had a tough time with this question--as we all should--but this year's gathering has helped me look at organizational models with a healthier perspective; to have a critical eye but also a soft heart.

3. What does HiDef do?
I enjoyed reflecting on who we are as a company by way of explaining our work within a space where not many in my peer group are focused. "We build social networks, mobile platforms, and engagement systems for social enterprises."

I think back to an ad campaign that says something along the lines of, "We don't make the car you drive, the ball you play with, the desk you learn on. We make them better."

That's what we do with applied technology in partnership with organizations on the move in the social sector.

4. What are OppColl's challenges?
Now in its third year, we have started to see patterns as a delegation. Holes. Flaws. Concerns. Getting louder. A lot is not right with OppColl. To use the definition above: there is poverty. The two major topics my colloquium discussed were inequity of expectation for those coming to the conference, and inequity of cultural awareness for those at the conference.

However, a point that was also made in the colloquium: There is a huge difference between things that need worked on and fundamental design flaws. I don't think either of these challenges are such defects in the design of this yearly gathering. Their gravity must be addressed, though.

5. Why do you do what you do? Why? Why? Why?
I participated in this soul-searching activity thanks to my colloquium moderator, Saul Garlick, who did a great job. The flow: ask a partner what they do, then follow up this answer by asking a "why" question of each response--four times.

("What do you do?" I serve great causes with the design and development of web platforms. "Why do you serve great causes?" etc etc)

The result when I did this activity was nothing short of getting to the root of what drives me to live and breathe every day. It's a centering activity and a powerful three-letter word. and takes ten minutes max!

Five Moments
1. Sunset
Pausing my mind and heart to see the sun sink slumbering smoothly behind the sea curtain. Highlight.

2. Dancing
On the last night, letting go of inhibition to celebrate unfettered collaboration for four days. Wishing that my wife was there with me. Highlight.

3. Elephant
Feeling as connected as I could possibly feel in a large group setting as we identified and discussed the issues of race, cultural incompetence, and gender for an hour. Highlight.

4. Swimming
Being one with the interminable waves of the Pacific, diving again and again into them at the moment of their breaking, silence underneath. Highlight.

5. Platform
Having conversation after conversation articulating why I believe that web platforms that connect people towards a common goal in a spirit of transparency are going to be the conduits of a changed world for the better. Believing in what I do every day.

Highlight.

Thu, 13 Oct 2011 15:58:00 -0700 Thoughts on MightyBell.com and The Power of Structure http://mrcook.org/thoughts-on-mightybellcom-and-the-power-of-st http://mrcook.org/thoughts-on-mightybellcom-and-the-power-of-st

Ideas. Relationships. Learning. They are all improved as the structure in which we engage with them improves.

I sample new web apps and startups like wine at a tasting. There's so much great innovation happening. Structure is the theme that keeps jumping out at me as the value that the most promising new apps provide.

www.mightybell.com is a web app that enables anyone to create an Experience made up of Steps. How general can you get concerning what you're trying to do?

Yet MightyBell is a prime example of an app banking on Structure. It enables anyone to provide more structure to, well, anything that can be classified into the massive noun, Experience.

See, I could write a blog post about the five best places to eat while visiting Lucca, Italy. People could read it, comment on it, share it with friends. But what if I could take that blog post and make an experience out of it, one that is five steps long? Providing more structure around the content like this allows me to then add tips to guide you on each step; provides the community who engages in the experience to comment on it step-by-step rather than in one broad comment area; helps foster a sense of achievement beyond the one felt by simply finishing a blog post.

Better structure leads to better meaning. Better meaning leads to deeper engagement. Yes, we must be careful not to overstructure those experiences which are better off left as thought experiments, tenuous ideas, rambling reflections. But for every other experience that we want to have great meaning, the more structure we can provide to guide the experiencer, the better for all involved.

Not only that, but even while the going was good, it was hard not to let the tail wag the dog.  Despite knowing that the true future of the company was rental, it was hard not to spend time focusing on the area of the business where most of the money was coming from.

Former CEO of Netflix shares my take on the decision: A Netflix/Qwikster split helps Netflix get stronger and gives the nod to Qwikster, the aptly-named has-been, to die off slowly in a few years.

Mon, 26 Sep 2011 09:28:00 -0700 May the Best Brand Win http://mrcook.org/may-the-best-brand-win http://mrcook.org/may-the-best-brand-win
In order to subscribe to the plan, called Blockbuster Movie Pass, consumers will have to subscribe to Dish Network. That means selecting one of Dish's cable packages--the company recommends the "America's Top 200" plan, which actually includes 220 channels for $39.99 a month. From there, members can add Blockbuster Movie Pass (starting at $10 a month) to gain access to DVDs by mail (one disc at a time) and streaming content, for roughly $50 per month in total.

Dish Network is going the absolute opposite direction of Netflix. They're trying to merge two very different brands (into one muddled product). Netflix has just separated two different products (and created two brands in the process).

Again, I think Netflix is going the right direction, despite the initial backlash.

Lesson: Unify and simplify. Don't hold on to sacred cows.

Thu, 22 Sep 2011 12:26:00 -0700 On Facebook's New Timeline, and Changing the World http://mrcook.org/on-facebooks-new-timeline-and-changing-the-wo http://mrcook.org/on-facebooks-new-timeline-and-changing-the-wo
Now Facebook is making your profile into a more holistic timeline, or scrapbook, of your life. This will enable a new class of applications focused on helping people express themselves to emerge and revolutionize existing industries and experiences.

The founder of Causes goes into some good depth about what Facebook's new interface for one's profile means not only as an aesthetic change, but as better mechanism for allowing one's core passions and actions "rise to the top."

Before Timeline, the only way for you to help your friends understand something that was very important to you was to shout loud and often via status updates. People have done that and the "wall" has turned from Activity Display to Incomprehensible Graffiti. I have apps posting to my wall, me posting to my wall, others posting to my wall--it's a mess.

At the same time, one's Profile has never been very sexy to look at, and there's no reason to return to it, meaning that, again, the only thing to do to really see what I care about is cull through my activity stream.

Timeline solves both those problems (a messy Wall and a boring Profile) by helping users fuse the idea of actions and aspects. You are not only who you say you are (the old approach to "profiles") but also what you do (the old "wall" approach). Timeline allows users to fuse "you" by allowing you to express who you say you are via the actions that you do.

All this leads to a better platform for app developers. You see, because the Timeline is now focusing on user actions to determine "who they are," app developers now have a better place to allow their users to express themselves without fear of sharing actions becoming too spammy.

As the founder of Causes articulates in his post, those who really care about their causes now have a much better place to communicate their actions for that cause rather than the boring Profile or the noisy Wall.

All in all, I'm pretty excited about timeline, not only from a personal perspective but from a business/application development perspective.
