A new approach to school vouchers, school choice, and better communities

How about we redirect our attention on giving parents a choice between existing schools within a broken system? Instead of shuffling and causing what the Boston Globe so interactively describes, let's mash up quality, interactive online learning (such as Khan Academy) with a reimagined form of the apprenticeship model to foster local citizenship again.

I want to make a new choice: Stay within the broken system or Forge a new path that's both local (community-based) and global (digitally infused).

because of the city's school assignment system, the 19 children on Montvale will travel a combined 182 miles each day to attend a dizzying array 15 of public, private, and charter schools. It costs the city dearly in transportation costs, and costs the neighborhood its sense of community.

Knowledge-age technology makes the value of physical goods, as well as services, depend increasingly on their knowledge content. The creation of knowledge through learning and the embodiment of knowledge in software now hold the keys to wealth. So far, most economists and politicians remain relatively clueless about this new economic reality. Many still claim that manufacturing is the essential core of a "competitive" economy. The truth is that software is the most important business in the modern world.

I think this ("software is the most important business in the modern world") is why I chose to go full time with HiDef rather than continue as a traditional teacher.

I miss teaching greatly, and I know that I'm on a crash course for something great in regards to my software design experience uniting with my passion for lightbulb-empowerment moments for teens.

If you have a passion for teaching/education, read the article and let me know if you agree with the contention that public education is "the last great bastion."

Take one Central European folk dancing team, a small folk band and an added overlay showing array locations and get them to dance the algorithms in time to "appropriate" folk music. The result is slightly surreal and for a time at least slightly hypnotic.

What good teaching is all about right here. And some good dancers to boot.

Quest to Learn is a new school built around the idea that games make a better framework for designing the education experienc than factories.

I tend to agree, but before seeing this school I wasn't sure what the application could look like. The models and methods I'm seeing from the site and different case studies around the web are inspiring to say the least, speaking as a former public schoolteacher.

What do you think about this school and the emerging model?
